The River Keepers

MR Circle: Dom Laporte Completed: July 2022

Size: 35 x 55′

Located on the outside wall of Karuna Cafe in the heart of Ottawa’s Chinatown. This gorgeous mural depicts two blue herons with their beaks crossed, as though making a heart with their necks and heads. Leaves and red flowers place the blue herons in a natural scene, with a yellow and orange background as though the sun is setting behind them.

Artist’s statement: “This mural design entitled ‘The River Keepers’ is meant to symbolize the proximity of Ontario and Quebec as these two provinces are connected by way of the Ottawa river. The local community is very much an amalgamation of residents from these provinces and this mural is meant to commemorate that connection.

This mural was commissioned and facilitated by the Somerset St. W – Chinatown BIA and the City of Ottawa.”
