“Our Relations” is a community-engaged sculpturesque mural in Vanier neighbourhood of Ottawa that fused Indigenous and multicultural aesthetic representing the neighbourhood.
This was a collaboration between the lead artist Kseniya Tsoy, Anishnaabe artist Mark Seabrook and an installation artist Tito Medina, who are newcomer, Indigenous and refugee artists respectively.
Through a thorough community consultation the project has collected visual symbols representing and speaking to community members coming from diverse cultural backgrounds. The artwork features a central figure of an Anishnaabe representing the host nation who is surrounded by a botanical pattern that includes Trillium flower and Fleur-de-lis from Franco-Ontarian flag, Caribbean bird of paradise flower, Persian buteh (paisley), Metis floral designs – all stemming from the same source under the Sun. The three smaller pyramids represent three oceans of Canada, and feature Sedna – an Inuit goddess of the sea, and a narwhal.
This mural was funded by the Diversity in the Arts Program of the City of Ottawa and the Vanier BIA.
