Young Dancer leaping for Joy
Artist(s): Rebecca Remme & Eden Remme Watt

Moving Elevation

Completed: November 2024

This was commissioned by the Citadel + Compagnie with a grant from the City of Toronto. “Citadel + Compagnie is a dance organization with its home, The Citadel: Ross Centre for Dance, embedded within the Regent Park community of downtown Toronto. Through its creation, curation and cultivation of contemporary dance, Citadel + Compagnie’s mission is to make a significant and lasting contribution to dance in Canada.” (excerpt from https://www.citadelcie.com ).

In addition to their primary mission as a dance organization, they provide classes to children in the community and they were invited to contribute to the mural by creating images of their community. Their artwork was digitized and transformed to be the backdrop for some of the panels in the dance sequences.

Work began on the mural in spring 2024 and was completed in October 2024. The design was created digitally and printed onto alupanels for installation at the wall.

There are four sections to the mural along the long wall in the alley, separated by windows. Each section shows dancers with vibrant backgrounds showing the city and neighbourhood. The middle two sections have backgrounds with neighbourhoods that were created by the children in the dance company and digitized.
