Call for Artist Opportunity Overview
This project is an exterior public art initiative located on the west-facing wall of 2229 Kingston Road in the neighbourhood of Cliffside, Scarborough. The mural will replace three community murals that were removed as part of a redevelopment activity in the surrounding area. The intent is to create a new artwork that honours the neighbourhoodโ€™s history, character, and natural identity while introducing a fresh, contemporary visual presence along Kingston Road. When entering the Cliffside neighbourhood from the west, this wall is one of the first things you see. This is a great place to welcome the community and visitors! The project will be developed in collaboration with the Mural Routes and LCH Developments, with support from the local City of Toronto Councillor and input from the community.

Artists are invited to submit applications to this call with priority given to local artists or those with a strong connection to the neighbourhood.

The desired mural should pay homage to Cliffside and the surrounding Scarborough community while incorporating a modern twist. The artwork should feel rooted in place, while not being overly literal or traditional. Cliffside village is steeped in history, with families traveling from across Canada to visit the Bluffs. The early 1900s saw Cliffside Village in its heyday with many motels and new homes being constructed. Currently, Cliffside Village along with Scarborough itself is seeing a resurgence. Scarborough has become Torontoโ€™s major multi-cultural region, with many new families to Canada calling it home. The final concept should feel contemporary, thoughtful, and memorable. It should be visually strong from a distance while offering detail and storytelling up close. The mural should contribute positively to the streetscape and create a sense of pride for residents, visitors, and the broader Cliffside community.
