Murs à mots – Hommage à Dany Laferrière

En 2014, MU a pris ses quartiers sur l’avenue Savoie (entre la rue St-Denis et la Grande bibliothèque) pour coucher sur les murs une ode à la littérature grâce au talent de plusieurs artistes-muralistes choisis par un jury: Jason Botkin, Five Eight, Les Hommes de Lettres, William Patrick et Adam Sajkowski, Gene Pendon, Bruno Rouyère et Dominique Desbiens, et XRAY.

Véritable rencontre entre les arts visuels et la littérature, ces « murs à mots » soulignent l’historique du secteur comme un haut lieu de savoir (Université de Montréal, UQAM, école littéraire de Montréal, etc.), le 100e anniversaire de la Bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice (sise sur la rue Saint-Denis) et le 45e anniversaire de l’UQAM en 2014 ainsi que le 10e anniversaire de la Grande Bibliothèque en 2015.

Dans le cadre de sa collection Les bâtisseurs culturels, MU rend cette fois hommage à Dany Laferrière par une murale réalisée par Gene Pendon, débutée en 2014 et terminée en 2015.

Lancée en 2010 par MU, la collection Les bâtisseurs culturels vise à reconnaître l’inestimable contribution des créateurs de la métropole de différentes disciplines artistiques, qu’ils soient montréalais d’origine ou d’adoption, au rayonnement local, national et international de la scène culturelle montréalaise.

Neuf artistes ont été déjà reçu cet honneur : Paul-Émile Borduas (Ville-Marie, 2010-2011), Oscar Peterson (Sud-Ouest, 2011), Miyuki Tanobe (Verdun, 2012), Marcelle Ferron (Tunnel Champ-de-mars, 2013), Alys Robi (Cabaret Lion d’or, 2013), Michel Tremblay (Plateau-Mont-Royal, 2014), Cirque du Soleil — Guy Laliberté et Gilles Ste-Croix (autoroute Métropolitaine, 2014), Oliver Jones (Sud-Ouest, 2014) et Emile Nelligan (Quartier latin, 2015).

In 2014, MU took up residence on the Savoie Avenue (between St-Denis and the Grande bibliothèque) to paint on the walls an ode to literature, thanks to the talent of several muralists selected by a jury: Jason Botkin, Five Eight, Les Hommes de Lettres, William Patrick & Adam Sajkowski, Gene Pendon, Bruno Rouyère & Dominique Desbiens, and XRAY.

Real encounter between the visual arts and literature, these “murs à mots” (words walls) highlight the history of the area as a center of knowledge (University of Montreal, UQAM, Montreal literary school, etc.), the 100th anniversary of the Saint-Sulpice Library (located on the Saint-Denis Street), the 45th anniversary of UQAM and the upcoming 10th anniversary of the Grande Bibliothèque in 2015.

As part of its collection Montreal’s Great Artists, MU is paying tribute to Dany Laferrière with a mural realized by Gene Pendon, started in 2014 and finished in 2015.

Launched by MU in 2010, the collection of murals entitled Montreal’s Great Artists highlights the creative minds and forces who have made outstanding contributions to the local, national and international reach of Montreal’s cultural scene. The murals pay tribute to creators in a variety of artistic disciplines who are either from the city originally, or who have made it their home.

Ten artists have received this honor thus far: Paul-Émile Borduas (Ville-Marie, 2010-2011), Oscar Peterson (Sud-Ouest, 2011), Miyuki Tanobe (Verdun, 2012), Marcelle Ferron (Champ-de-mars tunnel, 2013), Alys Robi (Lion d’or cabaret, 2013), Michel Tremblay (Plateau-Mont-Royal, 2014), Cirque du Soleil — Guy Laliberté et Gilles Ste-Croix (Metropolitan highway, 2014), Oliver Jones (Sud-Ouest, 2014), Norman McLaren (Plateau-Mont-Royal, 2014-2015) and Emile Nelligan (Latin Quarter, 2015).
