ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Introduction to Mural Art is a free visual art learning program for all ages and abilities. Participants learn basic art, design, and mural-making skills from professional artists, gaining the skills and confidence to give input for the local Beaches Foodland Mural upcoming this summer 2019.
Introduction to Mural Art is comprised of six workshops, each three hours in length. Workshop topics include: drawing and painting techniques, colour theory, design challenges, mural techniques, enlarging techniques and large-scale collaborative final design projects. Each program aims to connect with a local mural project in the community where the program is being presented.
ABOUT THE LOCAL MURAL CONNECTION
Designs and brainstorming from the Introduction to Mural Art program will be taken as inspiration and input by the mural artist or artist team. The mural, produced by Mural Routes and Sobeys Inc., will be created by the artist or team of artists on the east-facing wall on the Queen Street Foodland, at 2040 Queen St E, in The Beaches, Toronto this summer 2019. The new mural will replace the badly deteriorating mural, which was covered in 2018.
The aim of the project is to not only provide community members with an engaging way to learn about mural art, but also incorporate community input to produce a mural that reflects The Beaches community in relation to Sobeys Inc. and Foodland’s brand and value promise.
This mural project, sponsored by Sobey’s Inc., includes a commitment to community consultation. Community consultation will include three forms: this Introduction to Mural Art program, an online survey, and a drop-in consultation event. Community consultation activities are being managed by arts service organization Mural Routes, with support from The Beach Village BIA. Project management and administration will be managed by Mural Routes.
