Mural Routes Unveils new Birch Tree Mural for Birch Cliff

Celebrate the new mural and meet the artists at Magnattude Hair Salon on Thursday, August 20th

August 14, 2015 (Toronto) – This summer, local not-for-profit mural arts service organization Mural Routes led their summer youth team to create a new mural as part of the Birch Cliff Community Mural Project. The ongoing partnership project, including this new mural, now totals 8 unique birch tree themed murals along Kingston Rd from Victoria Park to Birchmount.

Mural Routes invites you to come celebrate the new mural and meet the artists at 1647 Kingston Rd (at Birch Cliff) from 4-5pm Thursday, August 20th.

The mural, titled Birches at Sunset, was painted on panels this past summer and is being installed at Magnattude Hair Salon this week. The mural was designed and led by artist and Tara Dorey, assisted by Emlily Harrison and five youth employed at Mural Routes for the summer season. The youth team were mentored throughout the summer to brainstorm the design, cut and sand panels, prime, and paint under the direction of lead artists. This mural was made possible by the City of Toronto Economic Development grant.

The Birch Cliff Community Mural Project was initiated in 2012 when a group of long-time residents created a mural committee to work with Mural Routes to improve the visual appearance of the arterial road that services their neighbourhood. By engaging with Mural Routes, the Birch Cliff Residents’ Mural Committee aims to have this project act as a catalyst for community engagement, reduce the impact of tagging and encourage businesses to take pride in their buildings and become part of a street improvement program. This is an on-going project.
