What is Morty
Morty is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Canada, with a focus on street art, graffiti, and murals. He is known for using funny scenes with strange characters to reveal layers of himself and often incorporates elements of nature and technology to imagine worlds inside the mind. Morty's artistic practice extends to painting, sculpting, and digital illustration in the studio.
His work can be found in various locations, including tunnels, bridges, and alleyways in Toronto, as well as in Florence, Italy. Morty's past projects have been commissioned by street art organizations, private collectors, and developers.
Morty’s process begins by looking back to primary school, as he rapidly sketches on huge sheets of paper, drawing people, machines, robots, plants, and letters. This stream of consciousness drawing, coupled with influences from tattoos, graffiti, and comic books, helps him find content for his murals. Morty's commitment to spray painting led him to explore muralism, and he has gained professional experience working with organizations such as Artscape, StART, Moss and Lam, Jolly Productions and independently.
In 2019, Morty did a residency at Street Levels Gallery in Florence, where he collaborated with other street artists and muralists. His involvement with murals includes freelancing experience and acquiring certifications for Elevated Working Platforms and rigging/operating swing stages. Morty has extensive experience painting large exterior and interior murals using spray paint and latex paint, showcasing a well- rounded understanding of various processes, techniques, and safety procedures.
Notably, Morty's work ethic and pace are highlighted, with many of his murals being 200 square feet and completed in 1-2 days with preliminary designs and a grid pattern technique. One of his notable projects is the Baby Point Village mural, spanning 800 square feet, which he completed on his own in 10 days.
Currently, Morty is involved in props, set painting, and set decoration for TV, as well as home renovation. His aspiration is to create impactful murals that reveal connections in the human experience through funny and imaginative characters.
