Mural Routes is currently seeking multiple Photo Documentarians across Canada for work supporting our Mural Map of Canada project. We are looking for candidates who are interested in connecting with their community through mural art while developing their skills in photographic documentation and art and cultural heritage preservation.
DESCRIPTION
The Photo Documentarian is responsible for taking high quality photographs of the murals within their catchment area. Catchment areas include:
- Whitehorse YK,
- Vancouver & surrounding area B.C,
- Edmonton and/or Calgary AB,
- Winnipeg MB,
- Halifax and/or Moncton NS/NB,
- GTA/Southern ON.
They will use the photographs taken to populate Mural Routes’ Mural Map of Canada. The catchment areas are designated “central points” from which the Photo Documentarian can travel outwards at a radius of 3 hours to collect mural data. A Mural Archive Assistant will be paired with the Photo Documentarian with whom they are expected to collaborate, along with members of the community, to capture and record the mural history of each piece documented.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with the Tech Lead + Membership Coordinator and Managing Director of Mural Routes, the successful applicant will undertake the following key tasks:
- Working with the Mural Archive Assistant to research new mural locations and potential murals for documentation within the designated catchment area that aren’t already documented on the Mural Map of Canada
- Organising and arranging any travel within the catchment area needed for documentation work within the travel budget provided
- Performing digital photography functions on location while using professional knowledge and artistic judgement to ensure the production of quality pictures
- Work with the Mural Archive Assistant to capture all necessary history and information of the murals captured including year created, artist(s) etc.
- Operating and maintaining personal photography equipment.
- Performing digital work consisting of scanning, cropping, colour correction, and retouching
- Editing all image formats and any other media communication piece in concert with web, news, social media, and publications
- Uploading content to the Mural Map of Canada in tandem with the Mural Archive Assistant and liaising with Mural Routes as needed
REQUIREMENTS
- Enrolled in or graduated from a University or College program with a focus on photography, documentation or have an interest in photography and photo documentation with equivalent experience
- Must have own photo equipment (can include a phone with high quality outputs)
- Experience with tools to edit photo submissions (can include free online options)
- Ability to work independently as well as with a remote team
- Must have a flexible schedule to accommodate part-time work
- Must be willing to travel within the designated catchment area
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This is a remote position
- Travel to mural locations will be required and reflected in the travel budget
